Alipay or WeChat Pay — which should you set up first?
For foreign visitors, Alipay is generally faster and easier to activate. Set up Alipay first, then WeChat Pay as a backup. Having both gives you near-complete payment coverage across China.

Register → add card directly. No prepaid account or Tour Pass needed since 2025.
Download Alipay
Search "Alipay" by Ant Group on App Store or Google Play. One official app with the blue and white icon — no separate international version to hunt for.
Register with your home number
Tap Register, select your country code, enter your home-country phone number. Alipay routes you to the foreign-visitor flow based on your number.
Add your international card
Me → Bank Cards → Add. Supports Visa, Mastercard, Amex (from Feb 2025), Discover, JCB, Diners Club. Enter card number, expiry, CVV exactly as printed.
Verify identity
Enter your full name exactly as printed in your passport, then upload a clear passport photo. Alipay OCR fills most fields automatically. Verification is usually instant.
Test and understand limits
Test with a small purchase. After verification, limits may reach up to US$5,000 per transaction and US$50,000 annually, subject to account status and card issuer rules. No P2P transfers, red packets, or financial products on foreign-card accounts.

Common errors and fixes
Why it happens: The card issuer, card network, or Alipay risk controls may be blocking the transaction.
Fix: Try a different international card. If the problem persists, call your bank and ask them to allow overseas digital wallet or Alipay card binding transactions.
Why it happens: Passport number entered incorrectly, or passport photo was rejected
Fix: Re-enter your passport number exactly as printed — no spaces, no dashes. Retake the passport photo in natural light, flat on a neutral surface.
Why it happens: May appear when the card issuer or card type is not supported, or Alipay risk controls decline the request.
Fix: Try a different card. Credit cards generally have higher success rates than debit cards for international wallet binding. If one card fails, try another card or network.
