Why this matters more than you think
In major Chinese cities, the vast majority of transactions are mobile payments. Convenience stores, restaurants, street food, and taxis increasingly prefer or require WeChat Pay or Alipay. Set this up before arrival when possible — some steps are easier to complete outside of China.

Supports Visa, Mastercard, Amex, JCB, Discover, Diners Club, UnionPay
Download or update WeChat
Get the latest version from the App Store or Google Play. Register or log in with your home-country phone number. A Chinese number is not always required.
Open Wallet / Cards
Me → Services → WeChat Pay / Wallet / Cards. If WeChat Pay isn't visible, check your app version, region/language settings, or contact WeChat support.
Add your international card
Tap Add Card and enter your Visa / Mastercard / Amex / JCB / Discover / Diners / UnionPay details exactly as printed on the card.
Complete identity verification if prompted
Use your passport or other supported travel/residence document. Verification may be required for higher limits or certain functions. May be instant or take longer.
Set your payment PIN
Create a 6-digit payment PIN — separate from your WeChat login password. You will use this PIN for every purchase.
Test with a small purchase
Try a small offline merchant or convenience store before relying on WeChat Pay for your whole trip. Confirm the payment goes through successfully.
Common errors and how to fix them
Why it happens: The card issuer, card network, merchant category, or WeChat Pay risk controls may be blocking the transaction.
Fix: Try another international card. If card binding fails, call your bank and ask them to allow overseas digital wallet or China WeChat Pay transactions.
Why it happens: Passport photo may be blurry, cropped, or reflective — or the name does not match the card/account information.
Fix: Retake the photo in good lighting with all four corners visible. Confirm that the name on your card matches your account details.
Why it happens: WeChat Pay may not be enabled for your account, app version, region, or current settings.
Fix: Update WeChat, check whether Wallet / WeChat Pay appears under Me → Services, review app language/region settings, or contact WeChat support directly.
Why it happens: Your account may have a lower limit before identity verification, or your card issuer is limiting the transaction.
Fix: Complete identity verification if available in-app and check the current limit shown in WeChat Pay. If the issue persists, try a different payment method or contact WeChat support.
