How to Use MetroMan
in Shanghai
Shanghai Metro Route Planner · 地铁路线规划
A simple English-friendly subway planner for Shanghai — best for routes, transfers, travel time, and fare. Not for payment or gate QR codes.
MetroMan is for route planning — not for entering metro gates
MetroMan does not generate QR codes, buy tickets, or replace Alipay, WeChat, Metro Daduhui, or SH MaaS. Use it to plan your route, then use another method to actually ride.
What MetroMan is
MetroMan is a metro route-planning app. It is most useful when you already know your origin and destination metro stations.
- Station-to-station route planning
- Transfer lines and platform info
- Estimated travel time
- Estimated fare
- Offline route checking
- Simple English-friendly metro navigation
What MetroMan is not
- The official Shanghai Metro app
- A metro QR-code entry app
- A payment app
- A ticket-purchase app
- A full city map like AMap
- A replacement for Alipay, WeChat, Daduhui, or SH MaaS
Plan your route in MetroMan, then use Alipay, WeChat, Metro Daduhui, SH MaaS, or a physical ticket to enter the gate.

Download MetroMan before arrival
Install MetroMan China or MetroMan Shanghai from the App Store or Google Play before arriving in China when possible.
Choose Shanghai
Open the app and select Shanghai as your metro city from the city list.
Set English if needed
English is supported, but the exact language setting path may vary by app version and phone settings. If the app appears in Chinese, update or reinstall and check device language settings.
Find your nearest station
If you only know the attraction name, use AMap first to find the nearest metro station. MetroMan works best when you already know both station names.
Search your route
Enter your origin station and destination station. MetroMan will show available routes with line numbers and transfer points.
Review route details
Check the line numbers, transfer stations, estimated travel time, and fare before heading out.
Screenshot the route
Save a screenshot of your route before entering the station. Mobile signal and ads can be disruptive underground.
Enter metro using a separate method
MetroMan does not generate QR codes or buy tickets. Use Alipay, WeChat, Metro Daduhui, SH MaaS (Suishenxing), or buy a physical ticket at the station.
The best Shanghai transport app stack
No single app does everything. Here is how the most useful apps divide the job.
Subway route planning
Simple, English-friendly, offline-friendly
No gate QR code — no payment
Finding places, door-to-door navigation, walking, nearest metro station
Strongest city navigation in China
More complex interface for new users
Payment, transit services, some ride-code functions
Essential tools — required for most payments
Setup can be difficult for foreign cards
Shanghai Metro ride code / official entry options
Closer to official ticketing and gate entry
May be harder for foreigners to set up
Pre-trip orientation only
Familiar interface
Not reliable for live mainland China transit — GPS offset, incomplete data
Common situations in Shanghai
Airport to city
Use AMap to find your destination and the nearest metro station. Then use MetroMan to understand the metro leg. If you have luggage, compare with DiDi or an airport transfer — the metro can be crowded.
Hotel to attraction
Ask your hotel for the nearest metro station name. Search station-to-station in MetroMan. Most hotels in central Shanghai are within walking distance of at least one line.
Going to Shanghai Disneyland
Use MetroMan for line and transfer planning (Line 11). Check first and last train times carefully — Disneyland can be far from central Shanghai and the last train may be earlier than park closing.
Late-night return
Check the last train time before leaving your destination. Shanghai Metro does not run all night. After the last train, use DiDi.
Weekday rush hour
Avoid 7:30–9:30 AM and 5:30–7:30 PM on weekdays if possible. Platforms and trains are very crowded. Budget extra time.
Common problems and fixes
I can't find a QR code in MetroMan.
MetroMan is not a QR-code entry app. To enter the metro gates, use Alipay, WeChat Pay, Metro Daduhui, SH MaaS, or buy a physical ticket at the station counter or machines.
I only know the attraction name, not the station name.
Use AMap Global first to search the attraction and find the nearest metro station. Then return to MetroMan and search station-to-station.
The app is still showing in Chinese.
English is supported, but the exact switch path may vary. Update the app, check your phone language settings, or reinstall from the App Store.
Ads are blocking my route result.
Screenshot your route before entering the station. Some users opt for a paid or ad-free version if available.
Can I use Google Maps instead?
Not recommended for live Shanghai metro planning. Google Maps has GPS coordinate offsets in mainland China and incomplete transit data. Use MetroMan or AMap instead.
Does MetroMan work offline?
MetroMan is generally offline-friendly for subway route planning. Verify your installed version before relying on it underground — ads and map overlays may still require a connection.

Quick recommendation
For most first-time visitors, the simplest setup is:
- 🗺️AMap Global — to find places and locate the nearest station
- 🚇MetroMan — to understand the metro route and plan transfers
- 💳Alipay / WeChat / Daduhui / SH MaaS / physical ticket — to actually enter the gate
- 🙋Ask station staff if a route, payment method, or connection gets confusing
Frequently asked questions
Is MetroMan the official Shanghai Metro app?
No. MetroMan is a third-party route-planning app. The official Shanghai Metro apps include Metro Daduhui and SH MaaS (Suishenxing). MetroMan is useful for planning routes but is not affiliated with Shanghai Metro officially.
Can I use MetroMan to scan into metro gates?
No. MetroMan does not generate QR codes for gate entry. To enter Shanghai Metro gates, use Alipay, WeChat Pay, Metro Daduhui, SH MaaS (Suishenxing), or buy a physical ticket at the station.
Does MetroMan work offline?
MetroMan is generally offline-friendly for subway route planning. However, ads and map overlays may still require a connection depending on your version. Download and test the app before relying on it underground.
Is MetroMan better than AMap?
They serve different purposes. MetroMan is simpler and faster for subway-specific route planning. AMap Global is better for finding places, walking directions, and door-to-door navigation across all transport modes. Use both together — AMap to find the station, MetroMan to plan the subway route.
Can I use Google Maps for Shanghai Metro?
Not recommended for live transit in mainland China. Google Maps has a GPS coordinate offset issue in China and incomplete real-time transit data. Use MetroMan or AMap Global instead.
What app should I use to pay for Shanghai Metro?
For foreigners, the main options are Alipay, WeChat Pay, Metro Daduhui, or SH MaaS (Suishenxing). You can also buy physical single-journey or multi-trip cards at station counters and ticket machines.
